Mika was signed over by her owner to a vets practice with a suspected broken leg. Her temperature extremely high, she hadn’t eaten for two days and was so lethargic and unwell.
We were contacted by the vets to take on ownership on her and we of course agreed. Luckily after having X-rays there were no breaks - and it was found her leg was so limp and swollen due to actually having a HUGE abscess and her leg was full of pus. Mika has been on antibiotics for a few weeks, and the swelling has been coming down and her leg has been doing great.
However, a few days ago Mika stopped weight bearing on this leg and seemed in discomfort once again. On Wednesday she was admitted into the vets to be anaesthetised and xrayed to take a further look at what was going on, where we saw the extent of the effects of the initial infection.
After speaking to a specialist, the vets have told us that it looks like a case of hematogenous osteomyelitis. This is a rare form of bone infection that usually starts elsewhere in the body and then travels through the bloodstream to the bone.
We ideally need to take samples from the area and send them to the lab for culture, to see which type of antibiotic will work best to fight the infection.
Of course this all comes with a cost, and at the moment we have zero spare funding in the bank as we’re already struggling to clear the vet bills we have.
Please help wherever you can, pennies or pounds we appreciate anything you can donate. Let’s get Mika the best chance of a full recovery!
