Are you helping me make a big business step?

IMPORTANT EDIT: the first 75 participants have entered this campaign whilst the campaign text had a different content. These people shouldn’t worry about the changed text down here. The campaign has changed into a gifting campaign now the 75 credit slots have been filled up. The new text is for future participants of this campaign which has now has a new goal because of new and exciting developments.

Will you help me make a big business step?

I run a small, one man business making custom trumpets and I have been asked to move out of my current workshop space because my landlord needs my space to expand his own business. I was supposed to stay there but I have no choice other then look fora new place. Although moving my workshop is going to be difficult I have decided to look at it as an opportunity to make a big step with my own business.

My aim is now to move into a new, better workspace close to home. When I started this campaign I was expecting to be looking for a new rented facility but a friend read the campaign and has now offered to help me to possibly buy a facility. A building that Ideally also can function as a shop and teaching facility. By running this campaign I can give myself the security of a smooth move and reduce the financial risks of making the transition to a professional, owned facility.

People that are interested to read more about how I have built up my business and my personal reasons to why I aim to make this step with the focus on workshop activities (whilst I could make a living as a professional player and teacher) can scroll all the way down to read more.

How does it work and why would you participate?
I must start with explaining that my goal is not to take advantage of anyone. What I am trying to do is secure an amount of money that gives me the guarantee that the transition to a better workshop close to home is possible without letting my family suffer from it. Of course al  gifts are greatly appreciated and the money will be put directly into the business.

Background information
I have been working as a professional player and teacher for over 20 years. I played with very nice modern orchestras like the Radio Philharmonic Orchestra, Radio Symphony Orchestra, Rotterdam Philharmonic, Schoenberg Ensemble, Ives Ensemble, trumpet ensemble of the Royal Concertgebouw, have played over 500 educational programs with a Brass Quintet setup, and since 2007 I have mainly been working as a historic specialist at the Dutch Bach Society (Nederlandse Bachvereniging) and the Orchestra of the 18th Century here in the Netherlands. Besides that I have been teaching trumpet from the age of 16. And I still do. And I still love it.

At some point around 2005 I got into mouthpiece making. Then I decided to move towards making trumpets. Every penny of profit I made with it went back into the business. Five years later I started building my first trumpets. Then I got married. My workshop was the small shed behind the house. In 2014 the shed really became too small and I moved to a space triple the size. Our first son was born in the same year. Then in 2016, just after our second son was born the company I was renting my workshop from hit financial trouble to the point where I had to organize an emergency move to prevent all my tools, machines and materials to be lost. I managed to move all of my stuff to my current workshop which was a lot bigger again, but would cost me 45 minutes a day to get there. A few months later we moved house because our little house became too small for the family.

Around 2018 it became apparent that our second and youngest son, Oliver, was developing in a very different way than his older brother, William. It can be quite a challenge to keep up with Olivers pace and way of dealing with the world since he is on the autistic spectrum. We learn a lot about life from Oliver but the extra care and attention this asks from me, my wife and his bigger brother is clearly noticable. Over the last two years I have worked crazy hours which has taken its toll on my and my wifes wellbeing. Now Oliver is growing older we see that he will continue to need that extra care and attention so I have decided to take adjust my life to his and the families needs. Less touring abroad, more working close to home at steady work times whenever possible. I feel blessed that I have the chance to do so and that is why I grasp this opportunity with both hands.

A few weeks ago my landlord suddenly came to ask me if I wanted to prepare to move out soon. At first I panicked because since I have started the business I have always reinvested and I have worked without loans. But I didn’t feel that this was the right time to move.  Then a friend told me that units are going to be built in the start of the new year. Around the corner of where we live, and big enough for future expansion. Units that will be for sale for a good price. I never considered the option of buying, since as an self employed artist the banks laugh at me if I walk in for a loan. BUT:  My friend offered to possibly buy it for me and work out the financing together. What I am trying to do now is to have as much deposit and setup money as possible, so it enables me to keep working, improving and providing for the family.

At first I dismissed this because I was overwhelmed by my friends offer but the more I thought about it, the more I have started to look at this as an oportunity to work more, closer to my family, have regular work hours, maybe give up some teaching, give my wife the possibility to work (with me) again, being able to have a faster turnaround, etc, etc. With the end goal to improve quality of life for my family and me.

As I mentioned in the introduction above I didn’t count on the costs/time and especially energy of another move and such a big purchase. So that is why I have set up this campaign. This time I’d really like to do the move in a way that my space is secure and future proof. It will put my mind to rest knowing that I can keep working.  And all this I’ll be able to do in a beautiful workspace where customers hopefully can have a seat on a little sofa to enjoy a coffee and cookies whilst I work. My decision of making the move to a new place to set up depends on the outcome of this campaign, so I hope that you can help me turn this oportunity into a reality.

Thank you in advance for your continuing support!
