Help Miguel Walk Again

My journey started on November 4, 2023. I was admitted to Saint Elizabeth’s in Boardman, OH with a high fever, having pneumonia and sepsis. In the emergency room, while I was on the gurney, the nurse failed to raise the railing and left the room. When he did, I rolled off the gurney and landed on my right hip.

Over the next several months, the condition of my hip deteriorated, ultimately resulting in an infection that required a spacer to have to be inserted where my joint used to be. The spacer contained antibiotics, but it failed to clear the infection, and this past September, my hip was removed completely; I no longer have a hip.

My dilemma and my need for funding is that my insurance has run out, and I cannot receive rehabilitative care. I’m currently living at home bedridden, unable to stand or walk. If I were able to attend rehabilitative therapy in a nursing home for as little as three weeks, I would be able to receive daily intensive physical therapy, and the end result would be that I would regain the ability to walk to some degree. But there is no insurance.

The situation is more complicated by the fact that I only have 20 visits left for home care. Once that’s gone, I will have nothing. I’m 60 years old. I was an athlete, a powerlifter; I rode my bicycle and my motorcycles, and now I will possibly never have another hip due to my chronic infections. What was performed on me is called a girdlestone resection. It involves removing all of the hip, leaving you with just your pelvis and femur on the side where the hip was. I’m in considerable pain, and I’m very depressed. I hate asking for money, but this would make a significant difference in my life.
