Help Miguel Altamirano's Family's Recovery
Last week Somerville lost one of the kindest people you could meet, Miguel Altamirano. He was hardworking yet easygoing, funny, and generous. More than anything, he was utterly devoted to his wife Balbina and their son Emmanuel. Miguel, who hailed from Cuernavaca, Mexico, was a talented mechanic—and a maker of great tacos. He joined the Somerville Art's Council's Nibble program, along with Balbina, five years ago. Whether serving delicious tacos or agua frescas at festivals, or overseeing clean up at Nibble cooking classes, Miguel and Balbina were a great asset to the program. Miguel and his family are/were active and popular throughout Somerville: at Somerville Public Schools, Connexion and at Somerville Center for Adult Learning and Experiences (SCALE), where Miguel—despite ongoing health issues and regular dialysis—would arrive early and review his English lessons before the other students arrived.
Miguel passed away due to complications related to diabetes and pneumonia. Balbina and Emmanuel are now faced not only with grief, but with the financial burden of the funeral, medical bills, as well as living expenses like rent and utilities. It would be an enormous help if you can contribute whatever amount you can to this fund; the money will go directly to Balbina. Thank you so much for your help and support. La semana pasada, Somerville perdió a una de las personas más amables que pudo conocer, Miguel Altamirano. Era trabajador pero tranquilo, divertido, generoso y su sonrisa iluminaba la habitación. Más que nada, estaba completamente dedicado a su esposa Balbina y su hijo Emmanuel. Miguel, originario de Cuernavaca, México, era un mecánico talentoso y un fabricante de tacos geniales. Se unió al programa Nibble del Somerville Art's Council, junto con Balbina, hace cinco años. Ya sea sirviendo sus deliciosos tacos o aguas frescas en los festivales, o supervisando la limpieza después de las clases de cocina Nibble, Miguel y Balbina fueron un gran aporte para el programa.
Miguel falleció debido a complicaciones relacionadas con la diabetes y la neumonía. Balbina y Emmanuel ahora enfrentan no solo el dolor, sino también la carga financiera del funeral, las facturas médicas y los gastos de manutención como el alquiler y los servicios públicos.
