Support for my mom, Michelle Slade’s stroke recovery journey

Hi, my name is Kaylee Slade, and I’m reaching out on behalf of my incredible mom, Michelle Slade. She recently suffered a stroke and the emotional and financial impact has already been overwhelming for her.

On Wednesday, I got a call from her neighbor that she fell down the stairs, couldn’t walk, and was experiencing dizziness, delusions, confusion, and seeing double. When I got to her house, she was acting in a way I’ve never seen before.

Once I finally got through to her and convinced her to go to the hospital, they informed me these symptoms could possibly be due to a stroke and she was about to reach the critical 3-hour mark where they could give her TPA. TPA is a medication that dissolves blood clots in cases of an ischemic stroke. TPA can only be administered in the first 3 hours of the stroke symptoms. We are both so eternally grateful for God's timing as we arrived at the hospital just 30 minutes before the window for this closed. We had no idea what was going on, that there was any 3-hour limit or anything like that.

My mom has always been my best friend. If I could give her the world, I would, but right now, Im asking for your help. This is something she would never approve, and she will most likely be upset I set up this campaign.

She has faced many challenges throughout her life which have left her in a tough place financially. On top of it, her health insurance is not going to be able to cover too much of the medical bill. Right now, the main thing I want/need her to be focusing on is her recovery, but the financial strain from everyday expenses is already overwhelming her to begin with and now the medical bills are going to put an even bigger amount of stress on her.

It breaks my heart, that she didn’t want to go to the hospital in the first place because she was worried about the bills and that even before being discharged from the ICU she was already expressing her worries to me about how she’s not going to be able to manage these costs. My mom is currently a teacher and is so dedicated to her job, that while experiencing these symptoms she even got in her car and tried to drive to work.
