Help Michelle & Corky Stay Safe at Home

My name is Michelle Grady, and I am reaching out for help during the most difficult time of my life. In the past year, I have lost my husband, my son, my sister, and even my beloved Maltese, Cory, who was Corky's twin. Now, it’s just me and my dog Corky, and we are doing our best to get by. At 66 years old, I am permanently and totally disabled, with a fused spine, hips, and tailbone. I can’t get up and down the stairs safely, and every day is a struggle to manage even the simplest tasks. When I do make it downstairs, I have to stay there for about three days before I can make it back up. My walker is broken, and I need a wheelchair to help me get around, especially for doctor appointments or just to move my trash receptacle behind my house to avoid fines I can’t afford. Corky is my constant companion—he keeps me grounded and brings me joy, even on the hardest days.

Recently, things have become even more overwhelming. There is a slab leak located under my hot water heater, and the water runs out from underneath it into the woods, causing my utility bills to skyrocket. Living off my social security benefits each month, it’s become extra difficult to get by. My stove and microwave are broken, and I spent what little I had on a refrigerator that didn’t fit. I can’t cook for myself, and I have to rely on others to turn my hot water on and off. My home association is threatening fines because I can’t move my trash can, and I have no one nearby to help. To make matters worse, my Medicaid was terminated at the end of December, so I can’t see my doctors or get my diabetes medication. I never imagined I would be in this position, but I am doing my best to stay hopeful and keep going.

I love to crochet, and it brings me peace, but right now, I need help to get through this season. I am seeking help for both the equipment and labor needed for repairs. I pray someone comes to help me, because I am in danger of losing my home—this is all I have left in this world, and I so desperately want to be able to keep it. Thank you to everyone for your love and generosity at this desperate time in my life. I know there are still loving hearts left in this world.
