On April 9th, Michele, a single mother to a six-year-old boy, had a violent, life-threatening seizure at home. Her son was home at the time and knew he needed to call 911 to get her help. Michele, who has epilepsy, had been seizure-free for seven years. She taught her son how to call for help if she ever experienced a seizure. He is credited with saving his mother's life! The seizure lasted long enough for Michele to need to be airlifted from a local hospital near her home in Hibbing, Minnesota, to a hospital in Minneapolis. The care team put Michele in a medically induced coma in the ICU for 11 days. In that time, her son was in foster care for three days before he could be flown to California to stay with Michele's family.
Michele needs funds to help her move from Minnesota to California and be reunited with her son. This has been quite the ordeal for both of them, and she is so grateful to her family for providing a safe home for him while she recovers. She is desperate to reunite with her son and misses him terribly! Funds raised here will not only help her move across the country but will also assist her as she finds employment in California. Any amount helps! Please help this mama get back to her hero son!
Here are some more details on Michele's treatment and recovery:
While in a medically induced coma, she received an Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO), which is a type of life support used when a person has severe respiratory or cardiac failure. It essentially involves a machine that temporarily takes over the work of the heart and lungs, allowing the body's organs to rest and recover. After Michele woke up from the coma, she stayed in the ICU until the 23rd, then was transferred to the regular floor, where she had to relearn to walk and function as she did before the incident. Then, from April 28 - May 2, she was in a rehabilitation facility before being released back home. In addition to epilepsy, Michele has cerebral palsy and the right side of her body from the midline is weakened. She struggles to use her hand and she walks with a limp. Packing her belongings will be a challenge, so she will need to hire help or find volunteers to assist her with this move.
