Help Michael Through His Medical Crisis

On Wednesday, June 19th, Michael, my brother, was sent to the hospital with pneumonia and breathing issues. Michael has had a pacemaker and defibrillator installed a number of years ago to assist with his congestive heart failure.

Michael was placed in the ICU on Thursday, June 20th due to complications. While in the ICU, Michael went into cardiac arrest twice. Damage was done to the pacemaker and defibrillator due to the resuscitation efforts.

At that time, Michael was placed on a ventilator, multiple medications, placed in a medically induced coma, and placed on kidney dialysis as he had gone septic at that point.

On Saturday, June 22nd, Michael was transported to Newark Beth Israel hospital from Paul Kimball hospital where he was still on a ventilator and was in a medically induced coma. Michael has received extensive treatment at Newark Beth Israel hospital including an intra-aortic balloon, impella heart implant, and now an LVAD and RVAD. He remains intubated, on numerous medications, and dialysis. The ultimate result is that he will need to have a heart transplant and at some point in the near future from there a possible kidney transplant as well.

The LVAD and RVAD surgery procedures are considered a BTT (Bridge-to-Transplant) procedure, in an effort to help someone survive until a transplant is available.

Please keep Michael, his family, the surgeons, and nurses in your thoughts and prayers as they continue to treat Michael.

Due to all of Michael’s medical issues, he is unable to work. As a family, we have assisted in filing disability and FMLA paperwork but this often takes time to be approved and for any pay to come in.
