Help Michael Protect Rare Georgia Sarracenia Bogs
Donation protected
While there are a couple of organizations focused on preserving existing owned sarracenia habitat (NASC, Meadowview, TNC, etc), there are very few organizations that help individual land owners preserve habitat on their own private property. Private landowners face the daunting challenge of fronting all the work, time and money to preserve their own habitat, with little external help. It’s a tremendous amount of effort managing the land in balance with other uses to keep the sarracenia habitat happy.
And all that hard work can come crashing down overnight when wild hogs come along.
Michael Reeves has spent the past several years restoring and expanding his bogs in southern Georgia. Home to Sarracenia Flava, Minor and the Georgia S2 species psittacina. A recent DNR visit has validated all the hard work Michael has done with restoring his properties, elevating them to some of the finest remaining bogs in the state of Georgia
Michael is at the forefront of showing how through the hard work and determination of private landowners, that there is indeed a balance between preserving sarracenia bogs and utilizing the land for other purposes. His work is a showcase of what is possible in land management, and is a playbook for other landowners wanting to restore their bogs. But he is up against a difficult challenge: wild hogs destroying all his hard work.
Michael is in need of our help to further his preservation work and education efforts as a showcase bog in the state of Georgia. With wild hogs running rampant and digging up sarracenia rhizomes at night he is looking to purchase a hog trap that he can use to keep the hogs at bay and protect the plants and all of his hard work.
Many hands make light work, and here’s an opportunity for all the Sarracenia growers throughout the world to make a meaningful impact to the preservation of the plants we all love. Every little bit helps, and can help Michael defray the cost of a hog trap that can be used over and over again to remove hogs and keep the sarracenia habitat safe.
All funds for this GoFundMe will to towards the purchase of a hog trap to be deployed in the protection of the Sarracenia bogs Michael is maintaining
