Two years clean. Two years of fighting. Two years of choosing a better life, one day at a time.
I'm creating this GoFundMe for my brother, Michael.
Before I tell you what he needs, I want to tell you who he is and how far he's come.
My brother is two years into recovery from a serious drug addiction. I'm talking about the kind of drugs that steal lives, destroy families, and leave people wondering if they'll ever see their loved one healthy again. Heroin. Fentanyl. Methamphetamine.
But today, my brother is writing a different story.
For two years, Michael has made the conscious decision, every single day, to choose recovery. And for anyone who has ever battled addiction, loved someone battling addiction, or watched someone fight their way back knows that two years of sobriety isn't just a milestone. It's thousands of decisions to keep going, even when giving up might seem easier.
Michael remains very involved with Healing House, attends recovery meetings faithfully, gives back to his community, and continues putting in the work to build a life he can be proud of.
And believe me, it hasn't been easy.
Michael had an old, beat-up little car that eventually reached the end of its life. Rather than simply junking it, he donated it to another person at Healing House who had the ability to repair it and put it to use.
Even when he didn't have much, he found a way to help someone else.
He then spent months without transportation. He worked, saved his money, and eventually purchased an older pickup truck.
Now, to some people, buying an old truck might not sound like much. But to someone rebuilding their life after addiction, that's a HUGE accomplishment.
And Michael wasn't just buying a vehicle. He was investing in a dream.
His goal was to use that truck to start doing snow removal during the winter months, earning extra income and continuing to build a future for himself with a long term goal of having his own business.
Within a week of purchasing it, he had the truck registered, insured, and completely legal. These may seem like ordinary responsibilities to many of us, but for someone who once lived a very different lifestyle, they represent something much bigger: accountability, responsibility, and real change.
Then, less than two weeks later, everything changed.
Michael was involved in a vehicle accident that was not his fault. Unfortunately, the other driver was uninsured, and Michael only carried liability coverage.
Just like that, the truck he had worked so hard to purchase, the truck that represented his independence and his dreams, was severely damaged.
To make matters even more difficult, Michael had to spend the last of his savings just to get his truck released from the tow lot.
Think about that for a moment.
He worked hard, saved for months, invested in something that would help him become more independent, and through no fault of his own, found himself right back at square one financially.
But here's the difference between the Michael of yesterday and the Michael of today: He's not giving up.
He's still showing up for his recovery. He's still working toward his goals. He's still choosing a better life.
And as his sister, I don't want this setback to overshadow everything he's worked so hard to accomplish.
Here's why I'm asking for your help.
My brother has already done the hardest part. He made the decision to change his life, and he continues making that decision every single day.
He isn't asking for a brand-new truck. He isn't asking for luxury. He isn't looking for someone to do the work of recovery for him.
He just needs a little help getting back on the road.
As his sister, I have watched him struggle, and I have watched him grow. I know where he's been, and I see how hard he's working to get somewhere better.
I also know that sometimes, no matter how hard someone tries to do everything right, life still knocks them down.
And sometimes, all a person needs is for somebody to reach out a hand and remind them that their hard work matters. That people see them. That they are worth believing in.
That's what I want to give my brother.
We are hoping to raise $5,000 to help Michael get back into safe, reliable transportation. We have not yet been able to obtain a professional repair estimate, so donations will go toward repairing his truck if possible or helping him replace it if the damage is too extensive.
We would also be incredibly grateful if a local Kansas City mechanic, body shop, or business would consider donating labor, parts, or services.
No donation is too small. Even $5 helps. And if you're unable to donate, simply sharing his story could connect us with someone who can.
I know there are countless people out there who need help. But I also believe that when someone is genuinely fighting to turn their life around, we should do what we can to encourage them to keep fighting.
Recovery deserves to be celebrated. Hard work deserves to be recognized. And a person's past should never be the only thing that defines their future.
Michael has spent the last two years proving that change is possible.
Now I'm hoping we can come together and show him that he doesn't have to face every obstacle alone.
Sometimes people don't need someone to rescue them. They just need someone to remind them that their efforts haven't gone unnoticed and that there are still people willing to believe in them.
I'm not asking you to change my brother's life. He's already doing that himself. I'm simply asking you to help him keep moving forward.
From the bottom of my heart, thank you for reading, donating, sharing, or simply believing in second chances.
With love and gratitude,
A Very Proud Sister ❤️
