Michael Groissl “World Traveler” needs help! He currently is in a coma in a hospital in Bosnia-Herzegovina. He had an accident and fell down a flight of stairs (face first). He has a broken orbital bone and nose, but most dangerously a severe head injury which has had him in a medically induced coma for 7 days now. This campaign is to help him cover medical bills and the unknowns after he wakes up, as we do not know what kind of condition he will be in. (as a US Navy veteran he uses the VA for his medical coverage- unfortunately this does not cover his medical expenses while overseas)
Michael served in the US Navy in Japan for 4 years and absolutely fell in love with seeing the world. Since being out of the Navy he has visited too many countries to count. He loves photography and selling his photos would help fund his traveling on a budget- all he ever needed was a backpack, a camera and a passport.
After spending much time in Central America he traveled through Asia and fell in love with Vietnam. He decided to live there for two and half years. He supported himself by becoming an English teacher at an elementary school in Hanoi, Vietnam.
He finally moved back to the USA in January 2019 to complete his college degree.  Among the classes he took was Russian. He loved learning the language and was even in his schools Russian club. This summer he headed overseas to do some backpacking in Eastern Europe and then to visit Russia and dive further into learning the language. After visiting Hungary and Serbia, he ended up in Bosnia-Herzegovina where the injury occurred.
The US Embassy has been as helpful as possible keeping the family in the know about his condition, but the language barrier has made things quite difficult.
The family will keep posting updates as to his condition, but ask that you keep him in your thoughts and prayers as this may be his longest journey yet.
Any contribution made goes directly to Michaels medical bills, rehabilitation and travel back to the US for continued care.  Any donation at all is greatly appreciated. Please share on as many social media out let’s as possible.
Thank you!

After searching across the US I found a Bosnian speaking neurologist who took lots of time out of his day at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York City. He took the time to completely translate all of Michael’s records from Bosnian into English, and talked to me at length about his condition.
He agrees with the doctors in Bosnia that he is not physically ready to fly yet (even if he could, his mental current mental capacity would make it difficult). He is facing a long recovery and is currently in a rehabilitation clinic in Sarajevo, Bosnia. He needs 24 hour care, which currently my mom is there to provide (not provided by the clinic). He is able to talk, but his conversation wanders off topic very quickly and we are hoping with time he will come around. The US doctor has given us a very strong recommendation regarding medication. He needs to change it ASAP, although the new medicine has been extremely difficult to find in Bosnia. The medication he is currently on is used primarily in”developing nations”. Michael is also going to need many surgeries when he arrives back in the US. He has many facial fractures including the bone that helps support the muscle in his eye which keeps it in place.
We ask that you please continue to share his story and donate to his cause if you can. His bills are growing quickly and because of the medical system in Bosnia these bills are being paid throughout his stay so that he can continue to receive the treatment he desperately needs. We are so overwhelmed by the generosity of family, friends, coworkers and complete strangers. Those contributions have helped ease the burden tremendously. We look forward to the day when Michael will be able to understand and see how so many people came together to bring him home and get him the absolute best care. Please continue to keep Michael and the rest of the family in your prayers.

Michael was moved out of the hospital and placed in a rehabilitation facility today. Since the doctors are advising at least 3 weeks before flying, the rehab will begin in Sarajevo, Bosnia. While talking to my mom on the phone today I was able to hear Michael in the background and it made me very sad. Of course it was good to hear him talking, but he seemed to just be rambling on and not making too much sense. He currently can not take more than a step or two (assisted) and spends most of the day laying flat. At this point, even if he was cleared to fly I can’t imagine being able to take him on a commercial flight. All we want to do is to get him back to the US. Since he is a Navy Veteran he would be able to get the treatment that he needs through the VA, but we just need to get him back here. All the doctors/treatments have been cash only, so everyone’s help has been so impactful on getting him the best care possible while overseas. Thanks again to everyone including Maggie Newland from CBS 17 (WNCN) who will be airing his story tonight on the 11pm news. Please continue to share his story to help bring Michael back home!

So my mom has been in Bosnia for a couple days now. It seems as if the best course of action (other than bringing him back to the US since he is not allowed to fly yet) would be to move him to a rehabilitation facility in Bosnia.
He is still talking very slowly, is confused and not making sense all of the time. The process of his recovery looks to be more on the long term scale, but hopefully a more concentrated rehab schedule will help him. Please share his story and donate to his cause if you can. Thank you for all the well wishing we have received.
