Hi everyone,
I'm reaching out on behalf of a dear friend of mine, Michael Demetris - someone I’ve had the privilege of knowing for nearly a decade. Michael has always been a kind, compassionate, and supportive person – the kind of friend who shows up when you need him most. We even chose him to be the godfather to our first child, a testament to the love and trust we have in him.
Today, Michael and his partner urgently need our help.
Just before Christmas 2024, Michael discovered a lump in his abdomen and went to hospital for tests. After months of uncertainty and invasive investigations, he was diagnosed in March 2025 with an extremely rare and aggressive cancer: a large Myxoid Liposarcoma in his abdominal wall.
In June 2025, Michael underwent life-saving surgery to remove the tumour – a procedure so complex that it involved removing his entire left abdominal wall and rebuilding it with mesh and muscle grafts taken from his thigh. He spent nearly a month in hospital recovering.
Shortly after being discharged – still in pain and in the early stages of recovery – Michael was told that some cancer remains. He then endured seven weeks of intensive radiotherapy, with results expected in the coming months. If the treatment is unsuccessful, he will need to undergo further intensive treatment. Even if successful, Michael faces a 10-year journey of ongoing testing and monitoring, along with continued physiotherapy and rehabilitation.
At the same time that Michael was fighting for his life, he and his partner were also facing housing instability. Due to circumstances beyond their control, they were forced to leave their home and have been sofa surfing and sleeping on the floors of friends and family ever since – including immediately after Michael’s surgery.
Michael has not been able to return to work, and his partner, who has become his primary carer, has had to reduce her own working hours. They are currently not receiving any benefits, although applications for housing support and Personal Independence Payment are in progress.
We’re hoping to raise £3,000 to help Michael and his partner secure safe, stable housing while he continues his long road to recovery. Funds raised will go directly toward:
• A security deposit
• First month’s rent
• Initial living expenses
Their current situation is no longer sustainable, and securing housing will be a crucial step in supporting Michael’s recovery and mental well-being.
If you're able to contribute – no matter how small – it would mean the world to Michael, his partner, and everyone who cares about them. Your support will help them finally have a safe place to call home during this unimaginably difficult time.
If you’re not in a position to donate, please consider sharing this page with others who might be able to help.
Thank you so much for your kindness, support, and generosity.
With gratitude,
Paula
