Help Michael Fight Rare Kawasaki Disease

Donation protected
Hello you guys, my name is Meagan Camp, and I am starting this GoFundMe for my best friend—well, really she is like my sister—and her son Michael. In the past several days, he had been sick, running super high fevers that could not be brought down, as well as rashes and many other symptoms. So, yesterday she took him to the hospital. What she first thought to be nothing more than maybe a common virus that would just run its course has turned into a devastating diagnosis of Kawasaki disease, and it is attacking his little heart and liver. He is currently undergoing transfusions as well as a plethora of tests, and for this particular disease, there is not much study on it because of how rare it is, so she nor the doctors have any idea what ongoing treatment would be needed going forward. She is a single mother who is a full-time student and has been dedicated to her schooling so that she can get a stable career for her and her kids. She does Instacart sometimes to fill in the gaps, but right now, that is simply not enough, and with this just being thrust upon them, she is mentally trying to find her bearings and still trying to understand and wrap her mind around her son being diagnosed with such a rare disease. For her, the future looks very uncertain. Her insurance will cover some of the medical costs but not all, and Michael’s father is not helping support him at this time. I love them both dearly, so I am trying to create this GoFundMe because my heart is breaking for her, and I want to help support her in any way that I can! If anyone could donate towards helping Brittany and Michael get through this extremely difficult time, I would highly appreciate it, as would they! I am also including Brittany’s latest update below! Anything helps, you guys, if we can rally together to just show them love and support, especially during this holiday season! Thank you!!

So, update on Mikey: I brought him to Rady Children’s Hospital yesterday since his fever would not let up, and on day 5, new symptoms were starting. He was admitted and diagnosed with Kawasaki Disease. There are 3 stages to the disease, and it appears we’re in the acute phase. Basically, Michael has inflammation and swelling in his arteries and heart. Kawasaki is a systemic inflammation disease. We don’t know the long-term effects of the disease as it’s extremely rare, and even more rare because of his age. He’s also presenting with liver and/or gallbladder damage/issues. His liver values are off the charts. He is getting an echocardiogram and ultrasound today. He also has swelling and stiffness in his hands/feet.

They started him on immunoglobulin infusions and blood thinners. We just have to wait and see how he responds to that. We’ve got him hooked up to heart monitors, they are checking his vitals every 15 minutes, and he is really just under amazing care. He has also been added to a research study here and a possible clinical trial.

I feel very lucky and blessed that the hospital we are at actually has one of the only Kawasaki research teams and some of the only doctors in the nation specializing in it.

Keep Michael in your prayers, please.
