Michael & Phyllis Davis recently received unexpected news.
In January of 2019, Michael went to his Doctor for ear pain and was given antibiotics. Because the antibiotics did not help, and the pain worsened, Michael decided to go to his ENT physician in Jonesboro AR. After multiple exams, CAT scans, a consultation and biopsies at UAMS in Little Rock, AR, it was determined that Michael has squamous cell carcinoma of the base of the tongue that has metastasized to the lymph nodes in the neck. We are thankful that a CAT scan of his chest was performed and came back as negative- No cancer was found in the lungs.
Upon discussion by multiple surgeons, it was decided to proceed with surgery at UAMS for the removal of the tumor at the base of his tongue and the lymph nodes in the neck. Please pray that the surgery will not affect the nerve or muscles in Michael’s neck (the nerve helps to raise the shoulder). Michael had early age polio. He now uses his wheelchair except when transferring. He needs the movement of his shoulder and arm to be able to transfer back and forth from his wheelchair. After the surgery is complete and healing has occurred, it has been recommended to Michael to undergo chemo and radiation. On February 20th, they will again return to UAMS to discuss and schedule surgery.
The surgery and follow up will require considerable travel, meals, lost wages, etc. for several months. The financial impact will be great… without the help of others, not to mention the emotional journey.
To everyone that knows and loves Michael & Phyllis, we know that they always give to others and seldom will ask or receive anything in return. They have been faithful for years in ministry to troubled youth, prison ministry, through their Church as Elder, teachers, food ministry and any other capacity that there is a need.
