My name is Michael Cowan, I am twenty-three years old and have twenty-two months of sobriety. After losing everything and facing homelessness, my mother helped arrange a meeting with the head counselor of The Pathway Program. I showed up out of fear of being homeless, but I had no idea what was to come from that first meeting. With the financial assistance of Mr. Fisher and The Fisher Foundation, I was graciously given the opportunity to join outpatient. After countless relapses, months of lying, and a couple days in the hospital, I was on my last strike with not only the program, but everyone in my life. I decided surrendering to Enthusiastic Sobriety and giving one hundred percent effort was my only option. Three weeks later, my life took a 180 degree turn and I have yet to look back. Through God, service and the twelve steps, I have been given everything I wanted in life and more.
Addiction has been a part of my life since before I can remember. Through being involved in The Pathway Program, my life is better than I could have ever imagined. I am eternally grateful for what the Enthusiastic Sobriety program has done for me and it is something that I am ready to be a part of in a different way. My true passion is helping other addicts/ alcoholics. Coming from a family of addiction, I felt alone most of my life. What gives me the greatest joy and fulfillment in life is the ability to be there for someone that is feeling the same way I felt when I first showed up at Pathway. There is nothing like walking into Pathway seeing teens and young adults from all different backgrounds coming together in love and support of each other. Over the last 22 months, I have been given the opportunity to help countless teens and young adults through their hardships. By sharing my experience, strength, and hope I can help teens and young adults take prompt steps towards recovery and receive help to fight addiction. Being able to help others who are struggling has had such an impact on me, it has become my purpose in life.
I am very excited to be given the opportunity to take the next educational step towards becoming a counselor at the Meehan Institute for Counselor Training in Roswell, GA. I have an immense amount of gratitude for this unique approach to recovery. In training I hope to refine my knowledge of addiction, symptoms and effective treatments, and generally enhance my ability to help others effectively. It has been my dream to go to counselor training at the Meehan Institute for some time now. Unfortunately, due to my family’s financial situation and me having to be fully self-supporting; I currently do not have the financial means to pay for training. The money I have saved is very little as most of my income goes back into the Pathway Program helping those in early sobriety. I do not mind living day by day and using most of my resources helping others in the program. However, the time has come to begin another chapter in my life. The tuition to attend the three-month training is $5,800. I also need to cover my rent and living expenses while in training. I am asking for any assistance available to help pursue my dream of helping others. All donations need to be submitted before February 21, 2020. Thank you for the time and consideration.
