Hello, my name is Leslie Olenych and I am asking for help with sudden and unexpected medical expenses for my husband of 40 years, Michael Olenych. On August 24th, 2025, Michael experienced a life-changing stroke and has been in medical recovery ever since.

Prior to the stroke Michael worked daily as a caregiver, even at his own advanced age of 80. On his 81st birthday (September 19th) Michael experienced a serious fall at the rehab facility he was at, resulting in 2 broken ribs. While his recovery has been promising thus far, the fall on the 19th will result in more recovery time and expense. He is currently unable to use the left side of his body, although his progress so far had been encouraging.

Michael has always been a determined survivor. Back in 1986, he survived a catastrophic work accident in which he was knocked 50 feet head first into a heated vat of molten steel. By all accounts a miracle, a co-worker witnessed the accident and was able to pull him out of the vat before the injuries became fatal. Michael had to spend months in the hospital and the injuries he sustained then have had a lasting effect on his body.

When he attempted to sue for his injuries, the company announced they were going bankrupt shortly thereafter. As a result, Michael was given a fraction of the payment he deserved for all of the pain and suffering he endured. His injuries from 1986 are still relevant today, as they have hampered and slowed down his current recovery efforts.

I (Leslie) have had my own fair share of medical issues over the years, which have made me strongly dependent on Michael. I haven't driven a car in years due to macular degeneration and have suffered other past traumatic experiences which have resulted in post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Between all of the above, I have relied on Michael for transportation to and from work, for help with groceries, and other daily tasks.

Now that he is focusing on his recovery, I have been blessed to have the assistance of friends and family in the short-term, but I cannot expect them to help out forever. Any donations collected by this GoFundMe will be used to help primarily with medical bills, necessary car repair expenses, and supplementing for income lost from Michael's inability to work, among many other expenses.
