Hi, I'm Mia Im 20 years old and I'm fundraising for a new lightweight wheelchair.
On the 28/11/2024 I sustained a spinal cord injury from a car accident. From living alone, going to college and working independently this injury was a massive shock to me and everyone around me. within seconds my life changed and my independence was taken away from me.
Initially I was paralysed from the waist down and lost all movement and feeling. After being in hospital for a total of 4 months I started regaining some mobility back. Despite regaining some of my mobility for example walking very short distances with crutches I am still wheelchair bound when I leave my house and long distances. ( going shopping, meeting up with friends and family and other day to day activities).
My family and I have tried going through the NHS and Wheelchair services however after being told I was on a 30-35 week waitlist and initially being denied mobility and via PIP we have decided to go privately.
I am in need of a new lightweight wheelchair.
My current chair is bulky, inaccessible and very heavy. Friends and family have to push me and help me with transfers with the chair. This is restricting me from all forms of independence and travel on my own.
With a new lightweight wheelchair my accessible needs will be opened up massively and I will be able to regain some of my independence back.
After making a 6 hour round trip to a private wheelchair service I was quoted £4000 for the wheelchair which is perfect for me. At this current moment in time my family and I do not have the funds for this so any help at all will be greatly appreciated.
Thank you for taking the time to read and potentially donate.
Mia :)
