Help Meredith Edgar Release A New Album (On Vinyl!)

Hello friends, fam, and fans!
My name is Meredith Edgar. I am a full-time musician living in San Francisco, California. I am a voice teacher, singer-songwriter, and frequent performer. I figure most folks who see this will know me from the local music scene here in the Bay Area, but some of you may have heard my music on the soundtrack to Annapurna Interactive's video game Maquette , which featured my songs "Tidal Waves " and "Blue " on the trailer and soundtrack.
Although I am primarily a performing musician and that is where my passion and comfort lies, I have released recorded music in the past; most recently my album On Whatever You Prey which I recorded and released during the COVID pandemic in 2021, and a single "Washed Up" which I recorded with my dear friend Danny Allen and released in 2023 (with supporters' help, we made a pretty music video for it, too!)
I've been working on some new songs that I'm eager to share with the world, and am about to go into the studio to start recording a new album. I'll be recording with producer Peter Craft at Boxer Lodge, where some of the best artists from the Bay Area and beyond have recorded their latest music (check out Noelle & The Deserters, Halou, Kacie Hill, The Dogweeds, Jacob Aranda, just to name a few). I'm thrilled to have some top-notch musicians joining me; my core band will be my amazing pals Jamie Duncan and Dawn Ellerbeck (perhaps you've been to our residency at Little Hill Lounge?), and on drums will be the incredible Mike Burns of the Cosmo Alleycats. I'll be doing my usual vocals and guitar, plus some piano (!!!) and who knows what else; Boxer Lodge is stocked with all kinds of fun instruments and I am so excited to find some new sounds to help bring these songs to life.
And now the moment you've been waiting for; how is Meredith going to pay for all this? WHAT AN EXCELLENT QUESTION!!
First of all, I am an unsigned, self-managed musician, and a teacher, and neither of those are typically known for raking in big paychecks. I'm also technically a solo artist, meaning I don't have a cohesive band with other folks where we pool our money to go toward projects like this. I plan everything, make the budgets, and pay the folks who play with me, which usually means spending money out of my own not-so-deep pockets.
I have about $3000 of savings that I'm able to put toward this project for now, but the total costs are going to be much more than that; my current estimate is about $16,000, and will likely wind up being a bit higher. I have been overwhelmed by the generosity of my community when I have asked for support for past projects, and as uncomfortable as it always is to ask, I am here doing it again, because I want to make this album, and I hope you want it made, too.
Here's a rough breakdown of costs that I'm budgeting for:
- Recording/Mixing/Mastering: $5,600: This includes studio time (initially 3 1/2 days with a couple extra at a later date for overdubs, additional instrumentation), mixing, and mastering for all songs.
- Pay for the band: $2000: I'd love to pay them more! These guys are the best and are also endlessly generous, and playing for very low rates considering the value of their skills and time. They have big hearts, and I am grateful.
- Vinyl/CD pressing: $5000: People have asked me frequently when I will release physical albums (especially vinyl), so I'm doing it! I'm planning on using Pirate's Press for both physical and downloadable versions of the album. I really believe these songs will sound amazing on vinyl, so this part is very important to me.
- Photos/Cover Art: $1200: This will cover a photoshoot for album art that will also be used on merch (yes, I'm finally making something besides pins and stickers! More on that below).
- Graphic design: $800: This is one category that I honestly don't know much and am still researching, but based on some Googling this seems like a safe estimate for what I will need for album art and versions of the photos for merch.
- Merchandise: $1500: I'm so excited to finally have proper merch to sell at my shows and on my website! I'm planning on printing posters, t-shirts, tote bags, coasters, more stickers and pins, and also making a lyric book for the album for songwriting nerds (like me) who are into that kind of thing.
- ETC: $400: I'll be paying for food, gas, tolls, etc for the musicians who are coming up to Boxer Lodge with me, which is what this is for.
Just to be clear, none of this is going to me as pay for my work. I am not paying myself back for the days of work that I'm missing to go record, or for the gigs I haven't booked in the last couple months while I've been finishing these songs and planning out this project. Whatever I don't make from this fundraiser will get put on a credit card. This is all just enough to get this album made, and compensate the other musicians who are going to make it magical.
Thank you so much for reading this far, or skipping to this final TLDR section! In short, I am so excited to be recording a new album, and to be recording it with these people. With everything that is happening in the world right now, like a lot of people, I really need something to look forward to; and this is it for me. I hope that the songs on this album resonate with people and can offer comfort and beauty where they're needed. Thank you for helping me make this a possibility!!!

M.
