My name is Melvine, and I am reaching out for support as I navigate a difficult period of housing displacement. My situation began after the Rapid Rehousing program I relied on ended abruptly, and soon after, my employment with the COVID-19 Contact Trace Force Team was terminated due to citywide changes. Despite informing my case manager about my employment concerns, I received little guidance and was left to seek emergency assistance on my own.
After a long struggle to avoid eviction, I ultimately had to agree to a move-out settlement, with a deadline to vacate my current residence by October 31, 2025. My current work as a Field Representative for the U.S. Census Bureau does not provide a livable wage or consistent hours, and the recent government shutdown has left me furloughed without back pay. I am now seeking help to secure stable housing and cover moving expenses, which are critical to preventing a return to homelessness.
My experience is part of a larger eviction crisis affecting many residents in the District of Columbia. Stable housing would lift a heavy emotional burden and allow me to reset mentally, focus on recovery, and pursue new opportunities to rebuild my life. My goal is not only to regain stability but also to use my experience to inspire other women facing similar challenges and to advocate for better housing policies. Throughout this journey, I have prioritized my mental health, worked with an excellent therapist, and relied on my faith and inner strength to persevere. Your support will help me take the next step toward a safe, stable, and purposeful future.
