Melon, also known as Mellow, is our sweet, orange, round cat who has brought so much joy to our lives. At 13 years young, he’s still full of personality—vocal, chill, and incredibly intelligent. He’s been an indoor/outdoor cat his whole life, always aware of his surroundings and careful to avoid danger. But recently, Melon was brutally attacked by a large dog while outside. The dashcam footage from our neighbor’s car showed he sensed the danger and tried to run, but the person walking the dog had no control. If it weren’t for our neighbors and their dashcam, we wouldn’t have known exactly what happened during the scariest moments of Melon’s life.

The attack left Melon with two clean breaks in his sternum. Since then, he’s been traumatized—hiding under the bed except to eat or use the litterbox. My wife and I are heartbroken. We would do anything to help him, but the veterinarian hospital is asking for surgery, and we simply don’t have the funds despite working constantly. Without the surgery, Melon’s prognosis is poor, but with it, he could have another 3 to 5 years of comfortable life.
