Today I met Melissa and her daughter at a store, a sweet teenage girl and her mom who are both battling cancer.

I asked them if they had dropped a $20 bill. Even though they could have easily said yes and taken it, they immediately told me the truth and said it wasn’t theirs.

To reward their honesty, I gave them $500.

They both began to weep, and then they shared what their family has been going through.

Both Melissa and her daughter have already lost an eye from previous battles with cancer. Now, her daughter is actively fighting thyroid cancer and needs ongoing treatment.

At the same time, her husband recently lost his job. He’s searching every day for work, but losing his job also meant losing their insurance — leaving the family facing medical bills they simply can’t afford while trying to get their daughter the treatment she needs.

They’re fighting cancer, fighting to keep their family afloat, and somehow, in the middle of all of it, they still chose honesty when nobody was watching.

This family has already endured more than most of us could imagine. Let’s come together and take one burden off their shoulders so they can focus on what matters most: healing, getting their daughter through treatment, and getting their family back on their feet.
