Help Melanie Battle Stage 4 Cancer

Dear friends, family, and kind-hearted strangers,

My name is Melanie, and I am reaching out to you in a time of great need and vulnerability. In June of 2023, I was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer that had spread to my brain. Despite the ongoing cancer treatments showing positive results, I have suffered multiple setbacks due to side effects from treatment. In January 2024, I had a brain tumor removed, resulting in paralysis of my left leg from the knee down. I developed necrosis (severe brain swelling) in some of the areas of my brain that were irradiated last summer and have started to have focal seizures which led to 2 extended hospital stays this year. At home, I have had several falls, most recently fracturing my paralyzed leg in 2 places.

Cancer is not only physically and emotionally draining, but also comes with a significant financial burden. I have dedicated my career to working in nonprofit, but I have been unable to work since April due to my health. My husband, who works in residential construction, has already taken his 12 weeks of Paid Family Leave to care for me. But I still need around-the-clock care, so he is currently on a leave of absence and has no income. Our only income is $255 a week from my temporary disability. We have exhausted our savings and have been living off credit cards.
