Melania, our sweet and gentle dog, joined our family just six weeks ago after she retired from breeding. She has quickly become an irreplaceable part of our lives, especially with our three-year-old, and everyone who meets her—vets, techs, and neighbors—remark on her loving and docile nature. Melania’s kindness and patience have touched so many, and we feel incredibly lucky to have her.

Just days ago, Melania’s health took a sudden turn. She woke up overnight on Sunday vomiting and was clearly not herself, so we rushed her to the emergency room. The vets discovered a grapefruit-sized abscess in her abdomen that had burst, causing septic shock. She was immediately taken into emergency surgery, where they removed 1.5 liters of fluid from her belly. The doctors told us she had a 50:50 chance of surviving, but thanks to catching it early, she avoided further organ damage. Melania is now recovering, but each day in the hospital brings new costs and uncertainty about how much more care she will need.
