My daughter Mela has spent her adult life showing up for other people.

Through her work in social services, nonprofit efforts, and volunteering in her community, she has helped many people navigate difficult moments and find stability. Now she is the one facing one of the biggest challenges of her life.

At 47 years old, Mela was recently diagnosed with early-stage, high-grade (grade 3) breast cancer.

The diagnosis happened quickly. A biopsy confirmed the cancer, and an MRI revealed two additional cancerous areas in the same breast. Because of this, her doctors have recommended a double mastectomy followed by radiation treatment.

Imaging has not shown signs that the cancer has spread to her lymph nodes, which is encouraging. However, doctors will not know for certain until surgery and further testing are completed.

The months ahead will include surgery, recovery, radiation treatments, and many medical appointments. During this time, Mela will need to step away from work so she can focus on healing.

We created this fundraiser so she can focus on fighting cancer and recovering, rather than worrying about the financial strain that comes with treatment.

Funds raised will help cover:

• Surgery and medical expenses

• Radiation treatment and follow-up care

• Recovery after surgery

• Living expenses while she is unable to work

Our goal is $30,000 to help support Mela through surgery, treatment, and recovery.

Mela is not someone who would ever ask for help herself. She has spent much of her life helping others.

I am her mother, and I am asking on her behalf, because no one should have to face something like this alone.
