Hello, my name is Robert Hamill, and I’m organizing this fundraiser on behalf of my close friend, Mel Gooder, who has devastatingly been diagnosed with small cell lung cancer and has spread to three spots on the brain and one on the liver .

Mel’s top priority during this incredibly difficult time is ensuring his daughter is cared for by having his affairs in order. This fundraiser will help cover essential legal expenses, including lawyer fees and the costs associated with preparing his will.

With Mel unable to work, your support will also help with:

“Here is a little history into how I have arrived at this point.

Back in late December, I came down with what felt like a cold. It continued to worsen. In mid-January, I went to the hospital where they did bloodwork and x-rays and diagnosed me with pneumonia. The X-ray also revealed my left lung was full of fluid. I was sent home without having it drained, and from there, my breathing and health declined.

I had to stop working in the third week of January and was referred to several specialists. Eventually, a doctor used a camera to look into my lung—that’s when they found the cancer.

Just a week later, I had my first appointment at the Abbotsford Cancer Clinic, where I was told I had small cell lung cancer that had already spread: three spots in my brain and one near my liver. I was told to go to the ER immediately to be fast-tracked into the cancer program. I was also told I only had months left.

Had my lung been drained when I first visited the hospital, I might already be done treatment and in a better state. But now, the journey is longer and tougher.

My savings are nearly depleted. I still need to finalize my will to protect my house and investments for my daughter—legal fees alone will be over $2,400. The dental work I now require due to chemo, everyday bills, gas, insurance, and the ongoing cost of medications make this an overwhelming time.

My hope is to beat cancer and return to work—but it’s going to be a long road.
