"I'm just happy to be alive"
Those were the words Meka told me when I talked to her on the phone last weekend. For those that don't know, Meka started having pain that went misdiagnosed for two years. Recently, she found out the cause of the pain was colon cancer.
This is, of course, an unexpected thing for someone our age and the seriousness of it was overwhelming. After a whirlwind of doctors and avalanche of medical information, Meka started treatment for cancer including chemotherapy and radiation. I know the side effects have been debilitating for her: exhaustion, lethargy, nausea, lack of appetite, and one of the hardest side effects for a young woman, losing her hair. Despite this uphill battle, Meka has been fighting and staying positive, and like she said, "I'm just happy to be alive".
Meka has a mom, sister, niece, and girlfriend that need her in their lives. She is also a small business owner that has been actively working within the Portland beauty/esthetics community to make her business a safe and comfortable place for everyone, but especially women of color. The community is in dire need of a space like Meka's since there are few if any estheticians who are experienced with WOC skin care. Meka is an amazing person who brings so much joy to everyone she meets. I'm asking you to please consider donating any amount to help her pay medical bills and living expenses while she continues fighting. If you can't donate, consider sharing this fundraiser to help spread the word. And make sure to leave a comment here or on Meka's Facebook page; your love and support help keep her going!
