I never imagined I’d be writing this—but I’m reaching out with hope and a heavy heart to ask for help with a tiny life who desperately needed a second chance.

This is Meira (formerly named Kat), a 4-month-old kitten who had already been through more than most animals her age. She had only been in my care for an hour when I noticed her breathing was labored. It was after regular vet hours, so I rushed her straight to Central Orange County Emergency Animal Hospital.

After X-rays and an ultrasound, the vets gave heartbreaking news: Meira had a diaphragmatic hernia, likely caused by trauma before she came to me. Her abdominal organs had pushed into her chest cavity, compressing her lungs and making it almost impossible for her to breathe. She needed emergency surgery immediately to survive.

The estimate for surgery was staggering—between $3000 and $7,000—but I didn’t hesitate. I had just met her, but I knew I couldn’t let her suffer. I maxed out three credit cards to give her the only chance she had.

I don’t own or operate a rescue, so I wasn’t eligible for any rescue discounts or financial aid. Every cent of her care was paid out-of-pocket—and while I chose to help her because I felt it was the right thing to do, the financial toll has been incredibly difficult.

I’ll be honest: I don’t like asking for donations. I chose to rescue Meira of my own free will, and I’ve always tried to help animals quietly, behind the scenes. But here I am, humbly asking for help. This time, I can’t do it alone.

All receipts for Meira’s treatment and surgery have been provided for full transparency. Her care was handled at Central Orange County Emergency Animal Hospital, and I’m happy to share documentation with anyone who would like to see it.
