Help Mehmet Yilmaz Battle Stage 4 Cancer

Mehmet is 37 years old, married, and the father of a 15-month-old handsome boy (Kai Ali) in Carbondale, IL. He is passionate about his family and values them above all else on this earth! He has a heart of gold and has always been there for many of us whenever we've needed him. Mehmet left his hometown of Gaziantep, Turkey to do his MA and PhD at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he also found the love of his life Sue. After serving 2 years as an assistant professor in Turkey, he came back to Madison to marry Sue and began a new chapter of his life. However, right after he began his new professorship at Southern Illinois University, a tragedy struck.

Mehmet needs all his friends now! On November 3, 2023, he was diagnosed with Stage 4 translocation renal cell carcinoma which is a cancer of the kidney. This type of cancer is very rare and aggressive in young men like Mehmet. In a very short time, his kidney cancer metastasized to his lymph nodes, lungs, and liver. Since being diagnosed, Mehmet has gone through 11 weeks of chemotherapy and immunotherapy and is currently hospitalized at Memorial Hospital of Carbondale due to pleural effusion, which is a complication from liver metastasis. Despite facing this daunting adversary, his mind is strong and still willing to fight for his loving boy and family.

Mehmet has health insurance, but the out-of-pocket expenses will be significant. With the rising costs of healthcare have placed an unexpected strain on Mehmet’s family, I am reaching out to you for support. His journey ahead includes treatments, ongoing medical care along with unexpected hospital visits due to relevant complications that come with hefty price tags.
