Help and Support Megan

On December 1st, 2021, Megan Amor was diagnosed with Jeavons Syndrome and Behavioral Spells. Jeavons Syndrome is a rare form of epilepsy that results in frequent daily epileptic seizures ranging in size and intensity. Behavioral Spells are a condition that can result in many forms when faced with environmental triggers, including non-epileptic seizures, loss of awareness, loss of memory, loss of motor skills, fainting, and difficulty in learning.

This GoFundMe is needed to help pay for medical expenses and hospital stays, funding a service dog, and expenses related to the training and nurturing of a service dog for Megan.

Megan is 21 and loves reading, journaling, photography, walks under the warm sun, but mostly spending time with her husband and family. She loves sunflowers, lavender-scented candles, dark chocolate, and Twizzlers. She is a college student hoping to become a neonatal nurse practitioner one day.

Megan graduated Highschool as a Salutatorian before serving as a volunteer missionary in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Megan has always loved to help others. She is incredibly selfless, kind to everyone she encounters, and a very upbeat individual.

In December of 2019, while serving in Brazil, Megan fell in her sleep from a high bunk bed and hit her head, causing a Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). Needing to return home, her TBI left her with pain and an inability to walk for two months, requiring physical therapy for nearly a year to help her regain complete balance. Following her TBI, Megan began to develop signs of epilepsy from eye-rolling and twitching to zone out phases called absence seizures, where she becomes unresponsive, and full-blown myoclonic seizures. Seizures have become more frequent throughout the last year to the point where Megan experiences seizures several times a day. After some misdiagnoses, multiple ineffective seizure medications, countless doctor and emergency room visits, Megan found herself at Mayo Clinic in the epilepsy center due to these severe uncontrollable circumstances.

Her visit required extensive tests like EEGs and EMU clinic stays. These are multiple day-long tests and monitoring sessions that allow doctors to see how Megan’s brain functions and diagnose epileptic and non-epileptic seizures. Unlike the numerous visits to other doctors, Megan was able to find a solid diagnosis at Mayo Clinic.

Doctors found that Megan has epileptic and non-epileptic seizures. Megan has been diagnosed with Jeavons Syndrome, a rare form of epilepsy where epileptic seizures are common and frequent in day-to-day life, along with Behavioral Spells. 1 in 10 people diagnosed with epilepsy are also diagnosed with Behavioral Spells. Behavioral Spells are caused by anything from high levels of stress, anxiety, depression, overtiredness, fatigue, panic attacks, lack of food, flashing lights, exertion, and countless more triggers. But even with this new and vital insight, the solution isn't as simple as a new medicine. Finding a solution requires a trial of new medications with additional EMU clinic stays to control her epileptic seizures and psychological support and training to help curb her Behavioral Spells. This has proven to be a challenge for Megan as her diagnosis limits her ability to drive, work, to continue college and can put her in bed or the hospital for days at a time.

Megan’s next form of support goes hand-in-hand with her unresolved health issues. A service dog to comfort Megan, provide Deep Pressure Therapy (DPT), retrieve emergency and daily medicine, notify others that Megan needs assistance, and help protect Megan during seizures through bracing or positioning has been recommended.

A service dog must be trained to meet Megan’s individual needs and be compatible with her. An increasingly more common approach to service dog training is through an online academy for puppies. This means Megan, with the help and support of her family, would become the trainer for a young puppy with the support of multiple service dog trainers online. A self-training approach would help to ensure the service dog is an excellent fit for Megan through a training bond, along with tailored training specifically to best support Megan.

Her journey has been difficult, with many pitfalls, new problems, and new questions. However, Megan is a person of strength and inspires people around her to have hope in the face of challenges. She is always happy despite her circumstances. That being said, she needs support to help her press forward to solve unanswered questions, along with returning to the type of life she dreams of.

We ask for your prayers, support, and any funds you can spare in helping Megan through her recovery process and medical expenses. We hope with continued help; she will soon be able to return to the life she desires!
