On Friday, April 24, Megan was seriously injured in a traumatic horseback riding accident while on safari in Botswana. What was meant to be a meaningful getaway quickly became a life-altering medical emergency for Megan.
She was thrown from her horse at speed and sustained a severe traumatic brain injury, including brain bleeds and contusions, along with a hemothorax and five shattered ribs and requiring surgery. She is currently in the ICU in South Africa and remains under close medical care.
Megan is a devoted mother to her and her husband Matthew’s four year old daughter, Mary, and a loving wife, daughter, niece, aunt, cousin, friend, and coworker. She is also a highly skilled and experienced veterinarian known for her calm, gentle approach to caring for animals.
Due to the severity of her injuries, Megan remains unable to travel home. This means an extended and unexpected stay in South Africa while she stabilizes and begins recovery.
In addition to hospital and surgical expenses, the road ahead will likely include ongoing care once she returns home - such as occupational therapy, additional hospitalization, and rehabilitation. There are also growing costs related to:
• Extended lodging and travel for those supporting Megan abroad
• Lost income as Megan if unable to work during recovery
• Childcare support for Matthew and their daughter during this time
• Future medical transport or specialized travel when she is cleared to return home
Megan is surrounded by incredible friends and family, including a very close friend who canceled the remainder of their trip to stay by her bedside in South Africa and advocate for her care. Meanwhile, Matthew and their loved ones are doing everything they can to support her recovery from home.
