Help Medock, 29-year-old rescue horse!

On 12/2, Medock suddenly spiked a 106 fever at the retirement farm where he was boarded and was taken to Quakertown Vet Clinic where he was diagnosed with pneumonia. At 29 years of age, this is very much a life-threatening illness. Still, Medock - and his mom, Amy - are both fighters and Medock has continued to show signs of improvement during his hospitalization, already defying the odds stacked against him. But it's going to be a long haul, and it's going to be VERY expensive -- per the vet, $10-$20k expensive (UPDATE 12/22 - final bill is just over $20,000).

When Medock was surrendered to Last Chance Ranch in April, he was adored by the staff but overlooked by potential adopters. Not many people have the heart to take in a senior horse, especially one as old as him. But Amy, who has selflessly given her time to LCR as a volunteer since February 2022, immediately fell in love with the sweet, gentle chestnut gelding and finalized his adoption on October 5th, 2023.

Like most horses, Medock has quite the backstory -- at the age of 12, he was imported to the US from the Netherlands and went on to become a successful 4th-level dressage horse, traveling all up and down the East Coast to be shown and used in clinics. But as Medock aged, so did his owner, and when she could no longer care for him, she did the next best thing and turned him over to Last Chance Ranch.

When Medock trots across the field, you can still see glimmers of the magnificent dressage mount that he was in his youth -- he floats across the ground with his head held proudly and his ears up, showing everyone that despite his advanced age, he is still a horse worth loving. A horse worth saving. A horse that wants to live.

Since easing into semi-retirement at Fennel Farm, Medock's eyes have shone a little brighter and his whinny has gotten stronger. He always perks up when Amy comes to spend time with him, loves treats in any form, and, ironically, is best friends with the youngest horse on the farm, a 6-year-old thoroughbred named Boomer whom Medock has taken under his wing after all of the other horses picked on him.

We are hoping for the best possible outcome for Medock. Amy was well aware that she would be burdened with additional expenses that come with caring for a senior horse, but no one expected something of this magnitude so soon -- less than 10 weeks after she adopted him.

Any amount, no matter how small, will go directly towards Medock's vet bill as he remains hospitalized at Quakertown Vet Clinic, working every day to get back home to the people and the horses that love him.
