Help Bring Relief to Overheated Shelter Dogs in Miami

Miami-Dade Animal Services is facing an overcrowding crisis, with hundreds of dogs in need of homes—and safety. As the main shelter exceeds capacity, the Medley facility has become the last refuge for overflow. But there’s a heartbreaking reality: Medley is a 50-year-old open-air shelter with no air conditioning. While it provides a roof, it offers little protection from Miami’s relentless summer heat. On any given day, temperatures inside the shelter soar, putting the health and comfort of over 130 dogs at risk.

This fundraiser is not for myself. I am raising funds on behalf of the animals currently housed at the Medley facility. I serve as a Miami resident, donor, and as an appointed member of the Miami-Dade Animal Services Advisory Board, and I am committed to improving the conditions for the animals in our care—especially during this critical time.

Originally, this GoFundMe was launched to help purchase an additional commercial-grade swamp cooler to bring much-needed relief to the shelter. However, shortly after launching, a generous local HVAC company donated three portable air conditioning units and evaporators. While this was a huge step forward, we quickly encountered a new challenge: the shelter’s antiquated electrical system cannot support the power demand needed to run these units consistently. When multiple units operate at once, the power trips—leaving the dogs vulnerable during parts of the day.

Because of this, I’ve shifted the focus of this fundraiser. Instead of purchasing another swamp cooler, the new goal is to secure a solar-powered generator to independently power the donated units. If we cannot find a company willing to donate the generator, the funds raised through this campaign will be used to purchase one. This solution will allow us to bypass the failing electrical infrastructure and keep the cooling units running as needed—offering real, sustainable relief to these animals.

I will be the one receiving donations and will use 100% of the funds to either purchase or supplement the cost of a solar-powered generator. I will share receipts, updates, and photos through this campaign page to ensure full transparency. If needed, I can also provide the name and email of a senior representative at Miami-Dade Animal Services for verification purposes.
