Help a medical student finance her studies

Donation protected
Atsan Senghor is a Senegalese student attending St. George's University School of Medicine, an American 4 year medical program.  We are setting up this GoFundMe fundraiser in an effort to help her finance the rest of my medical studies. Below you may read more about her story and her current financial struggles. We thank you for your participation in this fundraiser.

Atsan's Story:

A lawyer, an economist, a diplomat, a physician, these are several of the professions friends and family thought I could pursue. But medicine is, and has been my choice for as long as I can remember. I could tell you about what inspired my 6-year-old self to decide to become a doctor. However, it’s what I do to keep making this choice daily, hard work inside and outside the classroom, that keeps me focused on this career path.

After graduating as a high school valedictorian, I obtained my Bachelor of Science in Physiology at the University of Oregon, as a Golden Key Honor Scholar. I was later accepted to St. George’s University Medical School (Grenada, West Indies), where I strive to maintain academic excellence by participating in the honor society and remaining on the Dean’s List. I have bettered myself through multiple volunteering experiences. From peer health education in college to organizing diabetes clinics in Grenada for the underprivileged, I have cultivated several key qualities, compassion and empathy.

As an international student from Senegal, my parents’ generous financial support and merit-based scholarships have fulfilled school tuition, room, and board. At St George’s University, I am the beneficiary of the Chancellor’s Excellence Scholarship. The Scholarship used to cover a significant portion of my tuition. However, due to recent increases in tuition costs, and because of my family’s current financial difficulties, I am unable to pay for my medical school tuition.

My financial challenges may force me to end my studies, 4 terms short of earning my Doctor of Medicine degree.  In Senegal we have the Wolof saying “nitt nitey garapam,” which translates to the remedy of a human’s predicament is another human. It is with this saying in mind that I am requesting your financial assistance to complete my medical studies.

With my work ethic and determination, I am confident that I will make your investment in my education worthwhile, should you grant me financial support, by becoming one of the physicians to change the healthcare tapestry in West Africa.
