We are a group of dedicated medical residents training in Medicos de el Centro residency program in Espanola, New Mexico, sponsored by New Mexico Primary Care Training Consortium. We are facing an unexpected and deeply challenging situation: our residency program is officially closing on December 31, 2025.

This news has upended our lives and careers. Residency is already a demanding journey, but now we are scrambling to find new programs where we can continue our training - and do so in time to avoid losing critical months of education and funding. Each of us is urgently reaching out to programs across the country, navigating complex transfer processes, and trying to stay hopeful in the face of uncertainty.

But with this sudden transition comes a wave of unexpected expenses:

• Travel costs for relocation (some of us will be moving to continue training in the programs thousands of miles away)

• Moving costs for ourselves and our families

• Temporary housing while we wait for placement decisions

• Broken lease penalties and apartment fees, which many of us are being charged despite having to leave through no fault of our own (Aimee, for example, now owes $4,000 to her apartment complex just for breaking her lease)

• Licensing and credentialing fees in new states

• Possibly lost income from disrupted schedules and gaps in training

In addition to these urgent costs, some of us are also carrying significant educational debt from medical school. We have worked hard to get here through years of study, sacrifice, and service, and now we are facing the possibility of financial instability just as we are trying to secure our futures as medical providers.

We did not expect to be in this position, and we are doing everything we can to stay afloat while continuing our training. But the reality is that these sudden expenses are overwhelming. We are asking for help not just to cover costs but to preserve the careers we have worked so hard to build.
