Yasmin (she/her), aka bashbabyblue, is a 25 year old Black transgender woman and artist born and raised in Oakland, CA. This is an urgent call to the community for mutual aid/crowdfunding support due to recent, costly expenses that have placed an extra strain on Bash’s current financial situation and overall well being.

Yasmin currently shares a car with her roommate as their source of safe transportation for regular, essential activities such as medical appointments, community music gigs, and grocery trips. However, pre-existing issues with the ignition have caused the car to frequently break down, meaning long distances are not possible. On top of that, a few weeks ago her car was broken into while parked in their driveway at home one night. Due to lack of funds needed to fix the car, the temporary protection of using plastic bags to cover the window has led to three more separate attempts of the car being stolen.. Damage included attempts at stealing the car battery and a house key being stuck in the ignition, rendering the car immobile, meaning Bash and her roommate no longer have access to safe, reliable transportation.
Safe and reliable transportation is necessary for Black trans folks navigating the city because of the vulnerabilities like harassment, violence, and possible exposure to COVID (which would further contribute to financial burden due to lack of access to healthcare, especially as hospitals in the Bay Area continue to be overcrowded). $360 has already been spent to replace the window/keyhole and after taking the car to a Hyundai specialist, she learned that the overall cost of repair would be $1,200.
DENTAL WORK
Yasmin has also been experiencing financial hardship due to four wisdom teeth that have grown in sideways, resulting in years of increasing, constant pain. On Thursday, December 4th, she went in for a consultation exam and x-rays to find out that the surgery would require an upfront fee of $2,500. Along with a molar cavity, this surgery is an essential, immediate need because crowned wisdom teeth can lead to infection and permanent damage. The filling will cost another $350, but the same dental office offers an option of dental care for uninsured patients for a yearly fee of $360.
Pre-covid, Yasmin worked at The Hidden Cafe in Berkeley, but was laid off due to the pandemic. The most recent Shelter-In-Place order combined with rising cases and the lack of pandemic relief from the government has led to the need for crowdfunding as the last option to ensure safety and survival. The total cost of medical expenses and auto repairs before taxes = $4,770. We are hoping to raise $5,500 due to the amount gofundme takes.
