On early Christmas morning, my life changed in an instant.

While riding my motorcycle, a driver unexpectedly merged into my lane. I swerved to avoid being hit, but that split-second decision sent me off the road and into the grass. I lost control of the bike and struck the guardrail at nearly 50 mph. The impact shattered my right shin and tore away a large section of skin and muscle. The force then threw me from the bike, slamming me into the rail again and breaking my femur while splitting my kneecap completely in two.

I woke up in a world of pain I didn’t know was possible. Doctors tell me I’ll need at least five surgeries, including a major procedure to graft new skin and muscle onto my leg. My body has a long road ahead, and so does my recovery.

What’s even harder is knowing that I won’t be able to work for a long time. The medical bills from these injuries are already piling up, and the financial stress is overwhelming on top of the physical trauma.

I’m grateful to be alive — grateful that things weren’t even worse — but I’m also facing one of the toughest battles of my life.
