Help Me Experience and Support Native American Culture This Spring Break!
My Story:
This Spring Break, I'm embarking on a life-changing journey to Tahlequah, Oklahoma, the heart of the Cherokee Nation. I'll be participating in an Alternative Spring Break program focused on immersing myself in the rich culture, history, and modern-day life of Native American communities, particularly the Cherokee and Choctaw Tribes.
Why This Matters to Me:
I believe in the power of learning through experience and giving back to communities. This trip isn't just a break from school; it's a chance for me to:
Truly understand: I want to gain a deeper understanding of the vibrant traditions, ongoing challenges, and incredible resilience of Native American peoples.
- Make a real difference: I'll be volunteering my time and effort to support the residents of Tahlequah, assisting with various needs and projects that directly impact their lives.
- Learn about historical truths: I want to explore the impact of treaties and historical policies on Native American communities, and to become more aware of social justice issues that are still relevant today.
- Experience cultural traditions firsthand: I hope to have the privilege of participating in tribal circles, learning traditional games like stickball, and engaging in other cultural activities that will broaden my perspective.
- Build meaningful connections: I'm eager to build bridges of understanding and respect between my own community and the Native American communities I'll be visiting.
How Your Donation Will Help Me:
I'm committed to raising $100, in addition to my program deposit, to directly benefit the local community. This money will be used for a project that our group will develop in collaboration with community leaders, to address a specific need they've identified.
