Help Me Visit My Mom Before Memories Are Gone

Hello, I’m Tyrone Mixx (retired Chicago House Music DJ), and I’m reaching out for support during a difficult time. This is very scary and humbling as I’m putting myself out there in a personal way I’ve never done before. I’m 68 years old, currently living in Moose Lake, Minnesota, 40 mi. south of Duluth, MN. I’m battling serious health issues, including stage IV kidney disease, severe loss of eyesight, and since 2018 a heart attack, congestive heart failure, and DVT’s & pulmonary embolisms (blood clots in the thighs and lungs). Restful sleep is essential for healing but that’s the last thing I’m getting. 


My Mom, nearly 91, lives in Fairhope, Alabama. Since 2018 I’ve only spent 3 hours with her when she flew up here for a quick visit. Throughout my life, she’s been my rock - offering comfort, wise advice, and prayers through every hardship. I long to spend a few precious days with her, to give her a hug, while she still remembers me. Her memory which had been relatively normal for a 90 year old but has suddenly started to diminish at an accelerating rate. Lord willing I will get to see her one last tine; to hug her and tell her how much I love her and for her years of prayer for my well being.


As far as restful sleep, my 15-year-old queen-size mattress is worn out with broken coils and a deep depression I’ve tried to fill with towels and blankets. On a good night I get only two or three hours of sleep due to discomfort and tossing & turning.

I declared bankruptcy three years ago severely cut my budget to essentials. I’m struggling financially and have been selling personal items to avoid overdrafts. I lack the means for a trip to see Mom or to replace my mattress, which is why I VERY humbly ask for your help.

- TRAVEL AND LODGING to Fairhope, Alabama:

- Round-trip airfare from Duluth, MN, to Pensacola, FL: $500

- Rideshare from Pensacola to Fairhope, AL: $125 each way ($250 total)

- Hotel for 4 nights at $125/night: $500. She lives in Assisted Living so I cannot stay with her - which would have been optimal.

- Total travel cost: $1,250

- NEW MATTRESS Queen-Size: A supportive mattress to replace my broken one: $1,750 (current box spring and frame seem OK)
