The bottom line is I sponsored Nelson to enter the United States legally under the Humanitarian Parole program. He was promised 2 years here. We did everything correctly, even paid his taxes for the 11 months he was here. With the elimination of the Humanitarian Parole program, Nelson and 500,000 other legal immigrants became "illegals," thus ending Nelson's dream of reaching his goal to save enough and live above poverty in Nicaragua. While I have donated to others' GoFundMe requests, I have never felt or had a need to create one for myself or another friend. The funds from this will go directly from me into Nelson's hands. I spoke with him about the slim possibility of going over the goal. We both decided that in such an event, he would share these funds, doing good deeds and helping other families in his village.
