Why I am asking...
I’ve been a triathlete since 1988, completing over 30 races. Since my Stage IV lung cancer diagnosis in November of 2024, I haven’t entered a single event.
This March, I plan to return—by competing in the Azalea Sprint Triathlon at the University of North Carolina Wilmington. I’m not racing for time or results. My goal is simply to start, finish safely if possible, and show up again.
I’m using this return to raise funds for NAMI Wilmington, an organization that supports individuals and families affected by mental illness through education, advocacy, and community programs. NAMI has been central to my life for many years, and I’ve been honored to serve in multiple volunteer leadership roles.
100% of all donations will go directly to NAMI Wilmington. This fundraiser is not for personal expenses, but to support mental health services in our community.
Serious illness—physical or mental—can interrupt life without warning. NAMI helps people and families find stability, understanding, and hope. If my return to the start line can help support that work, then this effort matters.
Regardless of race-day outcome, all funds raised will be donated directly to NAMI Wilmington.
NOTE: If you click to donate you will see suggested amounts ranging from $50 - $1,000. This was not my intention. I am working with the GoFundMe team to change these amount to $5, $10, $25, $50, $100. Quite literally, any amount would be greatly appreciated. If you can't afford a donation, I would appreciate your emotional support just as much!
Thank you for your support and encouragement.
