After losing my father two months ago, life has changed dramatically for both my mother and me. My mother is elderly and now relies on me for support, but I am currently unable to drive due to a revoked license. My license was revoked for two DUIs I received in 2021—horrible mistakes I made while I was in a very dark place after losing a beloved uncle. I am not proud of those choices, but I want to be honest about my journey. Since then, I have worked hard to turn my life around. I am almost three years sober now, with a sobriety date of 6/31/2023, and I have completely changed who I am from the person I was in 2021. To get my license back, I need to hire a lawyer, which is an expense I simply can't afford on my own right now. This situation has made it incredibly difficult to help my mother with daily needs and to maintain my own employment.
If I am able to pay for legal help and regain my license, I can move back in with my mother and continue working to support us both financially. I'll be able to drive her to important appointments and take her shopping in Plattsburgh, which is 25 miles away. Living in a rural area means public transportation is almost nonexistent, and taxis or Ubers are far too expensive for us to use regularly. Having my license back would also allow us to enjoy life more—attending concerts, community events, museums, art shows, and even taking meaningful trips to places like Asheville, NC, where my mother was born, or Chicago, IL, where she grew up.
Any support would mean the world to us as we navigate this difficult time. Thank you for considering helping me and my mother regain our independence and quality of life.
