My name is Alexa. I'm a 19 year old from a small town of about 800 residents, and It’s my dream to become a doctor and contribute to my current and future community’s health. In order to make this goal come true, I have taken steps including volunteering at a hospital in Moscow, Idaho, and studying in a pre-medicine pathway at Washington State University, but having the opportunity to study abroad in Accra, Ghana, would be my biggest move yet.

At over $5,800, I'll need all the help I can get in funding my way to Africa! This experience is expensive, and I need your support to engage in this learning opportunity that will equip me with the empathy and hands on skills necessary for a medical career. It will be an incredible opportunity for my learning, providing me with over 20 hours of classroom instruction and 150 hours of clinical rotations, which will be a big help in medical school applications and admissions testing.

I am prepared for the measure of culture shock that comes with studying abroad. As a girl from a small Montanan town, I know that I am at times isolated from diverse cultures. However, such a cultural gap allows for unique clinical experience and a new perspective on treatment and healthcare. Ideas and traditional knowledge in medicine will be widely different in Ghana compared to my country of origin, and by attending this program, I can bring back those ideas and offer a diverse perspective in my future career. Most of all, I want to challenge myself to be in another cultural atmosphere, to learn, and to come out of it more empathetic, with lifelong friends, community, and professional skills.
