My name is Ibrahim Al-Ashqar. I’m a 19-year-old veterinary student from Gaza, and my world has been shattered by the ongoing war. In just a few moments, I lost my home, my beloved cat Sukkar, and a part of myself. I have suffered severe injuries, and my family has been displaced countless times, clinging to survival in the face of unimaginable heartbreak.
Life in Gaza has always been challenging, but my family and I found strength in each other. My mother, a widow since I was four years old, raised six daughters and four sons on her own, working tirelessly to give us a future. But now, that future feels farther away than ever.
Our home was destroyed in an airstrike, leaving us with nothing but the clothes on our backs. I was injured in the blast, making it difficult for me to help my family in the ways they need most. The little stability we had has been taken from us, leaving us to navigate each day with uncertainty and fear.
As a third-year veterinary student, I’ve always found hope and purpose in helping animals. My dream was to use my education to care for the voiceless creatures who suffer in silence. But this war has forced me to pause my studies and has filled my days with sorrow and helplessness.
One moment from this nightmare stands out: my beloved cat, Sukkar, vanished during the airstrike. For three days, I searched for her, fearing the worst. When I finally found her, she was clinging to me, trembling with fear, her wide eyes mirroring my own pain. That moment, captured in a video, showed the world the devastation we endure—not just as humans, but as caretakers of the innocent lives around us. Sukkar’s story is a powerful reminder that even in the darkest times, love and compassion endure.
Despite the overwhelming challenges, I refuse to give up. I still dream of becoming a veterinarian, of rebuilding my life, and of creating a better future for my family and the animals that need me. But I cannot do it alone.
