Help me save my herbalist practice in Colombia

Queridos Amigos y Colaboradores,

Para quienes no me conocen, soy Caro. Artista plástica y herbalista de tradiciones andinas. Me encuentro en el camino de la salud holística desde hace más de una década, empecé con proyectos artísticos colectivos decoloniales y en los últimos años he dedicado mis esfuerzos y pasión al mundo de las plantas y a sanarme con ellas, a miembros de mi familia y mi comunidad. La necesidad de regresar a mi territorio natal, nace en primera instancia por la urgencia de estar en contacto directo con la materia médica que uso en mi práctica herbalista y para seguir aprendiendo de la mano de abuelas y mayores expertos en la coexistencia y supervivencia de los 5 reinos de los seres vivos de nuestro planeta.

Así como en el arte, en el herbalismo gran parte de la práctica debe ser autofinanciada, no exactamente por falta de recursos en nuestras tierras, sino por prácticas coloniales aún muy vigentes en el tiempo moderno, que dejan estos saberes por fuera de cualquier tipo de financiación estatal ya que al ser descentralizados, son también contra-sistema. Durante casi 3 años he estado invirtiendo tiempo y dinero en prácticas herbalistas que han sido de gran ayuda para quienes han hecho parte de los círculos y talleres que ofrezco. Siempre abrí espacio para quienes no tenían los recursos para acceder a mis servicios, siendo consecuente con los principios herbalistas de cuidar y sanar a todo aquel con quién coincidimos uniéndose en comunidad y sosteniéndose en colectivo.

Hace 15 meses perdí el trabajo que me permitía financiar mi práctica herbalista y pagar mis propios gastos. Desde ese entonces he trabajado duro por sostenerla, atendiendo a mis consultantes en parques o cafés de la ciudad, a falta de un consultorio y después de tener que entregar el apartamento en el que vivía, donde atendía a muchas personas y hacía mis formulaciones.

El hecho de vivir en una de las regiones de Colombia más azotadas por la violencia y sin ningún tipo de contención para casos de emergencia: el Cauca; ha incrementado esta crisis hasta el punto de afectar no solamente mi economía, sino también mi salud mental. Este es el sitio donde mis servicios como sanadora y guía son más necesitados, este es uno de los sitios donde se conecta directamente con los maestros indígenas y los abuelos que necesitan ser escuchados porque su mensaje guarda códigos para vivir en armonía en la tierra. Este es mi llamado en esta vida y lo que mi corazón me dicta hacer, como continuación de un legado familiar de servicio hacia los demás.

Como alguien que siempre ha creído en el poder de la solidaridad y el apoyo mutuo, me dirijo a ustedes, mi comunidad, en estos momentos de necesidad. Con su ayuda, podré recuperar fuerzas, volverme a registrar en el sistema de salud del país y atender mi agotamiento, para posteriormente continuar mi misión de continuar creando los tan necesitados espacios de bienestar para la comunidad.

Por Qué Necesito Tu Ayuda

He tenido el honor de heredar de mi abuela la sensibilidad de tratar a pacientes con diversas dolencias emocionales a través del cuidado y el saber que proporcionan las plantas. Soy el apoyo de muchas personas, sobre todo de mujeres y la falta de un salario fijo me ha puesto en un estado constante de supervivencia, lo que hace difícil centrarme en mi práctica o en mi bienestar personal. El estrés de la inseguridad económica ha hecho mella en mi salud, principalmente en mi sistema nervioso central, y necesito tu apoyo para poder continuar mi trabajo como herbalista.

Gastos básicos de subsistencia: Alquiler, servicios públicos, comestibles y otros artículos de primera necesidad.

Salud y bienestar: Recuperación, incluyendo cualquier atención médica necesaria, a través de la reincorporación al sistema de salud colombiano.

Apoyo para la práctica contínua: Recursos y herramientas necesarias para sostener y hacer crecer mi práctica herbal y mis proyectos artísticos, que están interconectados.

Dear Friends and Collaborators,

For those who don't know me, I am Caro. I am a visual artist and herbalist of Andean traditions. I have been on the path of holistic health for more than a decade, I started with decolonial collective art projects and in recent years I have dedicated my efforts and passion to the world of plants and to healing myself with them, members of my family and my community. The need to return to my native territory was born primarily out of the urgency to be in direct contact with the materia medica that I use in my herbalist practice and to continue learning from the hand of grandmothers and older experts in the coexistence and survival of the 5 kingdoms of living beings on our planet.

Just as in art, in herbalism a large part of the practice must be self-financed, not exactly because of lack of resources in our lands, but because of colonial practices still very much in force in modern times, which leave this knowledge outside of any kind of state funding because, being decentralised, they are also counter-systemic. For almost 3 years I have been investing time and money in herbalist practices that have been of great help to those who have been part of the circles and workshops I offer. I have always opened space for those who did not have the resources to access my services, being consistent with the herbalist principles of caring for and healing all those with whom we coincide by uniting in community and sustaining ourselves as a collective.

15 months ago I lost the job that allowed me to finance my herbalist practice and pay my own expenses. Since then I have worked hard to sustain it, seeing my clients in parks or cafes in the city, in the absence of an office and after having to give up the flat I lived in, where I saw many people and did my formulations.

The fact that I live in one of the most violence-stricken regions of Colombia and without any kind of emergency containment: Cauca; has increased this crisis to the point of affecting not only my economy, but also my mental health. This is the place where my services as a healer and guide are most needed, this is one of the places where you connect directly with the indigenous teachers and elders who need to be heard because their message holds codes for living in harmony on earth. This is my calling in this life and what my heart dictates me to do, as a continuation of a family legacy of service to others.

As someone who has always believed in the power of solidarity and mutual support, I turn to you, my community, in this time of need. With your help, I will be able to regain my strength, re-register with the country's health care system and attend to my burnout, and then continue my mission to continue to create much-needed community wellness spaces.

Why I Need Your Help

I have had the honour of inheriting from my grandmother the sensitivity to treat patients with various emotional ailments through the care and knowledge that plants provide. I am the support of many people, especially women, and the lack of a steady salary has put me in a constant state of survival, making it difficult to focus on my practice or my personal wellbeing. The stress of economic insecurity has taken its toll on my health, mainly my central nervous system, and I need your support to be able to continue my work as an herbalist.
