I am a mother to children who know nothing of childhood except fear. My children don’t have toys. They don’t go to school. They don’t laugh like other children. All they know is how to run and hide when they hear the sound of planes, and how to search the ground for a crumb of bread. My eldest is only seven, but he speaks like an old man—tired, broken, and full of pain.

Every morning I wake up thinking: Will I be able to feed them today? Will this day pass in peace? Will we still have a roof over our heads tonight?

I stand before them trying to smile, trying to be strong, but my eyes betray me. They now understand the silence. They can see the sorrow in my face.

We have nothing—no food, no medicine, no warm clothes, not even a mattress to shield us from the freezing nights.

Everything is too expensive. Even milk for my infant has become a distant dream. I watch him cry from hunger, and I feel my heart shatter into a thousand pieces with every tear.
