Help me sail to Greenland for an art residency!

Donation protected
Hi friends, my name is Megan Broughton. I'm a newly full-time artist in San Francisco preparing for a very exciting artist residency this summer! The MaréMotrice Residency takes place on a 15-meter boat, The Knut, equipped with an electric engine and powered by wind and solar. Six of us will sail from Iceland across the Denmark Strait (that's 180 miles!) to Greenland where we'll spend three weeks sailing along the coast and hiking when there are no polar bears around! More details about the residency and my work are below. Scroll down to see what you can help fund!

I am deeply excited about this residency for how it will fuel my artmaking and challenge me to my core. In 2019, I participated in a residency in Svalbard, Norway which completely changed the trajectory of my work. Getting back to the Arctic is one of the most important things I can do right now for my practice and career. Considering the dramatic changes that have happened in the region over just the past 4 years, I anticipate intense artistic development and massive shifts in my work.

I make experimental copperplate etchings of ice, originating from a place of care for Arctic environments which will change drastically during our lifetimes. I let overnight acid baths destroy copper and melting ice cubes create imagery on their own. I am eager to start making large immersive installations, time-based work, and to return to my first loves of drawing and painting. I have many ideas and am remaining open to how my time in Greenland informs new directions! For example it's entirely possible we'll see far less ice than hoped for due to climate change and that means my work will follow suit. See my current work here and sign up for my mailing list here. You can find out more about the residency on their instagram (@knutsailing) and on their website (maremotrice.ch).

Residency fees: 4200 CHF ($4676.36 USD with the current exchange rate).
My flights to and within Iceland: $1484.95.
This totals $6,161.31
I just ran a successful sale of etchings and merch (which you can still view and purchase here and here) amounting to just over $2000 (with more orders in the wings)! This $5,000 GoFundMe is so that I can pay the remaining residency fees, cover final gear acquisition (like glacier sunglasses and a ton of Dramamine), and other assorted expenses.

Please consider supporting me in this adventure by donating or, just as importantly, sharing this fundraiser with your networks!

With love and gratitude,
Megan

Here are some photos of our potential sailing path, The Knut, and my work!

The exact path depends on ice conditions and the weather. But after crossing the Strait from Iceland, we plan to sail between Tasiilaq (65°N) and Ittoqqortoormiit (70°N).
