On June 4, I graduated from Whitney High School a moment that once felt impossible. Many people saw my viral graduation speech, but they didn’t see the story behind it.
They didn’t see the nights my family and I were homeless sleeping on floors, in cars, on park benches, and anywhere we could safely rest. Even today, I still sleep on the floor, but I thank God every day that I have a roof over my head.
Through it all, one person never gave up on us: my mom. When everything around us seemed to be falling apart, she refused to quit. She kept pushing us to stay in school, trust God, work hard, and believe that our circumstances would not define our future. While others may have lost hope, she never let us stop believing. Her strength became ours.
Before my grandma passed away, I made her a promise that I would make it to the league. I also made a promise to my mom that one day, all of her sacrifices would be worth it. My greatest dream is to put a smile on her face and tell her, “Mom, we made it.” Basketball has always been my heart. Apart from my faith in God, it became the one thing that kept me focused and away from gangs, drugs, and the wrong path. It gave me hope that my story could be different.
But the journey hasn’t been easy.
I was laughed at. I was told by coaches that I wasn’t good enough. Those words hurt more than I can explain. I began to wonder why people couldn’t see what I believed God had placed inside me.
Then I transferred schools, and everything changed.
A coach gave me the opportunity I had been praying for. I earned playing time, became a team captain, and helped lead my team to many victories. For the first time, someone believed in me enough to give me a chance. That experience taught me something I’ll never forget: *sometimes your potential isn’t the problem you’re just waiting for the right opportunity. I have recently been accepted to the University of Wyoming, and wherever God leads me, I will follow. My dream is to earn my education, play professional basketball, and use whatever platform God gives me to inspire young people who feel forgotten or overlooked.
Today, I’m asking for your support. Not because I’m asking for someone else to build my dream, but because I’m asking for a chance to keep chasing it.
Every donation, every share, and every prayer helps me move one step closer to fulfilling the promises I made to my grandma and my mom. More than anything, your support tells a young man who once slept on floors, in cars, and on park benches that his past does not determine his future. Thank you for believing in me. I promise to never stop working, never stop believing, and one day, when I make it, I’ll spend my life helping others believe they can make it too.
