My name is Jon, and karate has been a part of my life, at various stages, since I was obsessed with TMNT as a boy. Through training, competition, and supporting fellow students in my local dojos, martial arts has helped shape my confidence, discipline, and resilience.
Eighteen months ago, I underwent major back surgery. At the time, even returning to normal daily activities felt uncertain, and stepping back onto the dojo floor seemed a long way off. The journey since then has involved months of rehabilitation, careful recovery, and rebuilding both physical strength and confidence.
Returning to karate has been one of the most rewarding challenges of my life. Every training session has represented progress - not just toward competition, but toward regaining something deeply important to me.
I have now been given the opportunity to compete at the GKR World Cup, an international competition bringing together karate practitioners from around the world. For me, this event represents the culmination of 18 months of rehabilitation, dedication, and consistent training after surgery. Simply reaching this point is a huge personal milestone, and I am proud to represent the UK, my dojo, and everyone who supported my recovery along the way.
Preparing for an event of this level comes with costs, including competition fees, travel, accommodation, equipment, and food during the event. I am therefore seeking support to help make this opportunity possible.
Any contribution, large or small, will directly support:
• Competition fees
• Travel and accommodation
• Competition equipment
• Training and preparation costs
I will be sharing updates throughout my preparation and competition journey so supporters can follow along and be part of this experience.
Karate has taught me perseverance, patience, and the importance of community. After everything involved in returning from surgery, being able to step onto the World Cup tatami means more than just competing - it represents recovery, resilience, and the power of continued effort.
Thank you for taking the time to read my story and for supporting grassroots martial arts. Your encouragement means as much as the financial support, and I am proud to represent everyone who helps me reach the World Cup.
