Hi, I'm Bob. In 2019, my wife and I got married and I started the process of immigrating to the UK. Let me tell you, it has been quite a ride. Cancer, chemo, and Covid seemed determine to take us down. But here we are. Facing the final hurdle on this journey to cement our lives here. I finally qualify for "Indefinite Leave To Remain." It confers full settled status. No more worrying about the next renewal.
I have taken my "Life In The UK" exam, gotten the background check, got my biometrics taken... Deborah and I meet the financial requirements. But this final hurdle comes at a price. I need to Fast Track this application and that costs £4000 we don't have to spare. Additional costs (consulting with a lawyer if necessary, crowdfund fees) would also be covered if we reach our goal.
I really love my new homeland, and the life Deborah and I have built together. There's something particularly gratifying about enduring so much to get where we are. And now that the destination is in sight, I must reach out for help. I don't mind telling you, it's not easy for me. We are, at heart, private people. But needs must.
Without this status:
- I risk losing my ability to work in the UK. Understandably, it's impractical for a lot of potential employers to bring me on if I am not settled.
- We could be forced to separate. Returning to America is not a viable option for us. Healthcare costs alone would be destructive. Not to mention the challenges of becoming an immigrant in America at the moment.
- We will live every day under the spectre of tumultuous immigration policies. Our life together -- like so many others -- would be under contant threat.
