Hi, my name is Fred, and asking for help like this is not something I ever thought I’d have to do.
Recently, I suffered a stroke that left me hospitalized and now in rehabilitation. It affected my left side and my speech, and while I’m working hard every day to recover, strokes are unpredictable and recovery takes time.
I served 8 years in the U.S. Army with the 2nd Armored Division, and after leaving the military, I spent my life building things. I’ve worked as a general contractor, property manager, and home builder, including building my own homes for my family. I’ve always believed in hard work, self-reliance, and helping others whenever I could.
Over the years, I’ve worn a lot of hats:
- Veteran
- Construction company owner
- Property manager
- Builder of homes and infrastructure
- At one point, even an aspiring artist; several album covers out there still carry my work
I was born and raised in Texas, growing up on the Texas coast, and I graduated from Flour Bluff High School. I’ve been married to my sweetheart Margo for over 47 years, and together we’ve raised a daughter, gained a son-in-law, and are blessed with two grandchildren.
In recent years, when construction work slowed due to the economy, I poured my heart into creating GoLooker, a travel vlog and blog meant to encourage families to get out, explore, and spend time together. It wasn’t just a project, it was a purpose.
Now, everything is on pause.
Because I’m self-employed, I don’t have paid medical leave, disability benefits, or employer-sponsored insurance. With hospital stays, rehabilitation, ongoing medical care, and no ability to work right now, the medical bills and living expenses are piling up faster than I can manage.
From my hospital bed, I shared this with the GoLooker community:
“Strokes are an insidious thing… it takes a while to recover. I’m in rehab and hopefully we’ll get back out on the road again.”
Right now, my full focus needs to be on healing, regaining strength, mobility, and speech, without the constant stress of how I’m going to cover medical costs and basic living expenses while I recover.
